GETTING THE RIGHT MATTRESS

There are so many different kinds of mattresses out there. What is the difference?”

Choosing a mattress is a tough process. You are spending a third of your day on your mattress. Sometimes with the one you love. What would you choose?

There are 3 primary kinds of mattresses on the market. How does it feel? What are the pros and cons?

  1. Spring Mattress

Spring Mattress is the most common type of mattress on the market. Brands that you may know carry spring mattresses will be Seahorse Mattress, Four Stars and Simmons. Made primarily from spring. It has one of the shortest shelf life with a mattress and when the topper is gone, it can be very hard for your body. Due to the rise of the popularity of motorised bed bases, spring mattress is not suitable for motorised bed base as it is going to be deformed

Pros

  • It is affordable

Cons

  • A very short shelf life of 5-7 years.
  • Primary material is metal springs. This results in a firm mattress, which creates pressure points on contacts. Pressure points are the cause of pain and strains
  • It is not suitable for motorised bed base due to it being made out of metal spring.

2. Memory Foam Mattress

Usually marketed as NASA Technology, memory foam mattress is made of polyurethane (PU Foam), initially designed to absorb shock for astronauts in the 1960s. The mechanics of a memory foam mattress is simple. Using your body heat to adapt the mattress to the shape of your body. Notable brands uses memory foam: Tempur, Zinus

Pros

  • It uses body heat to contour to your body shape
  • It reduces pressure points

Cons:

  • There will be off gassing when opening a memory foam mattress due to volatile organic compounds (or commonly known as VOC). VOC may results in headaches, nausea, or dizziness
  • Heat retention. So for memory foam to work, you need body heat. When you remove the heat retention from the equation, Memory foam does not work.
  • Due to the mechanics of how a memory foam mattress works, users generally sleep into the mattress. This results in very little support from the mattress as the mattress “give way” to the body
  • Because of the heat retention nature, users sweat into the mattress causing it retain a lot of moisture. This will result in mold growing.

3. Natural Latex Mattress

Made out of rubber tree sap, natural latex mattress is known to be considered a more superior mattress material all round compared to the other mattresses out there. It is more ecologically friendly as it uses only 10% of the energy required to manufacture compared to the other 2 kinds of mattresses. Due to the natural elasticity of rubber, it gives more support while conforming to the contour of your body. Notable brands: Dormiente

Pros

  • It gives the support of your body needed
  • It allows your body to rest on top of the mattress giving you a hugging, nesting feeling.
  • It is naturally open cell structure and porous making it a well ventilated material making it naturally an anti dustmite, mildew and mould resistance.
  • It has a long shelf life of 15-20 years with only 2 cm sag

Cons

  • It is a pricer option.

4. Hybrid Mattress

Concept of a hybrid mattress is simple. Get 2 different types of mattress to try to get the benefits of both mattress. A lot of times, it can have a topper system such as a spring mattress and a memory foam topper. or natural latex topper with memory foam. This works but it will also have the drawbacks as well. Notable brands such as Woosa

Spring mattress and a memory foam topper- the mattress will only last as long before the topper gives way. Topper is usually 5 cm thick to hold your weight.
