Pillow Buying Guide For Neck Pain Relief

For many people, pain and strains around the neck area can be just a simple solution. A change in pillow height for the perfect fit.

Alright goodnight blog post is over.

How do you choose the correct pillow height?

It depends on 2 things. Your sleep posture and your mattress firmness

Let’s talk about your sleeping position

Correct Pillow Height for Back Sleepers

  • Make sure the pillow just touches the top of your shoulders.

This is a common mistake and this will cause hunch and a lot of strain on your shoulder. Try to put yourself in the shrugging position. Now imagine this is your default position for the whole night.

  • When you are laying on your pillow, your forehead and chin should be level

If your forehead is too low and your chin is too high, your Pillow is too low. You will have a lot of pressure behind the neck and a lot of pulling strain at the front of your neck. This causes breathing difficulty.

If your forehead is too high and your chin is too low, there will be a lot of pulling strains from the back of your neck. This will result in snoring.

  • There should be no space between your neck and the pillow. No contact, no support
  • Your nose bridge is should be parallel to the ground
  • There should be no space between the pillow and your neck
  • Rule of thumb: You should not feel tilt around your neck area.

No contact means no support!

  • There should be no upward or downward strain on your neck area

So how does mattress firmness affect the pillow height? With a general rule of thumb.

If you have a firmer mattress, a higher pillow will be a better choice. This is due to your body being more on the surface when you have a firmer mattress.  That is why you need a higher pillow for the support for your neck

On the other hand, a softer mattress requires a thinner pillow because you are going deeper into the mattress.

But here is a question. Why are you not getting a mattress firmness that is most suitable for you?
